Minerva had prepared a ball for the return of the Fowls from Russia. never before had it occurred to her that her mother and Artemis' had been childhood friends...

"A Christmas theme!" her mother had said, completely ignorant of his friend's son's agnosticism.

but still, Minerva toiled and supervised to furnish, decorate and arrange things needed for that ball...

and when that night came, an unfortunate fate had befallen her.

she stood beside the punch bowl as she had always done in soirées and social gatherings, preferring the company of inanimate objects over people, but tonight...

...it was the one place she did not wish to be.

"Minerva Paradizo." greeted a blank, flat voice, with a small tinge of hatred, almost disgust, and a distinct air of Irish. he stood there holding a wine glass up to eye level, inspecting the quality of the wine. "pleasant surprise."

the sarcasm hardly affected Minerva. she had come to the ball prepared, and focused, callous and unfazed. no harsh words that would come from Artemis Fowl would penetrate her defenses.

"yes. what a pleasant—"

"MISTLETOE~!!!" cooed her mother in the distance. this was the twenty-seventh (or was it twenty-ninth?) time she had heard the phrase tonight, and did not bother to look... until she saw Artemis' stone facade shaken a bit with dread.

her mother and his joined hands and watched the 'young couple' intently.

"mistletoe, dearies!!!" her mother cooed excitedly once again, urging her on.

"b-b-but, mother!!!" she whined desperately. but her mother would not stand for it.

"dear... Artemis is waiting." she said with a small, disappointed pout. Minerva could do nothing but look back into Artemis' cold, numb gaze... and that slight... charming... curve on his lip... forming a perfect little mischievous smile...

"shall we get this over and done with?" Artemis said, with an uncannily calm air, and an impeccable callous tone.

"ahem... a-alright..."

Artemis leaned in, and as their lips were a centimeter apart, he sprung a painful, but alluring comment her way:

"have you no clue that mistletoe is poisonous, Miss Paradizo?"

Minerva would have retorted with a shrewd remark, if not for the fact that her lips were preoccupied.

after the surprisingly tender kiss, the boy once again leaned in, but this time to whisper: "perhaps you shouldn't let your mother decide on the furnishings."

i haven't been inking lately... :O_o: i wonder why...
